Engaging evening with honey-on-gravel vocals and a rumbling fingerstyle guitarJohn Smith was engaging and energetic in his performance. To a longtime fan as me, all the songs felt fresh, even the older ones. But John seemed to be able to reach out to those who were new to his music as well. Having toured the new album Headlong for three months, he played a lovely mix of songs from this album and the older ones. A spine chilling rendition of Axe Mountain from the 2009 release, Map or Direction, stood out as one of the finest moments. John has stories to tell in his songs, and also small peculiar anecdotes in between the songs, like how one of his songs is four minutes long and took six years to write, while another is three minutes and was written in a minute and a half. John proves that one voice and one guitar can stand on its own and feel fresh, unique and engaging. I greatly ook forward to seeing him again in Copenhagen next year.
